About the Course
Our 6-week Sewing 101 course is the perfect starting point for anyone new to sewing. Whether you’ve never touched a machine or just need a refresher, this hands-on course will teach you the fundamentals—machine operation, essential tools, and key techniques for sewing with accuracy and confidence. Each week builds your skills through fun, beginner-friendly projects like coasters, pillowcases, and tote bags. By the end of the course, you’ll have a strong foundation, a few completed projects, and the confidence to start sewing on your own or move on to Sewing 102.
Week 1: Introduction to Sewing (Onboarding)
Students are welcomed into the studio, introduced to sewing safety, and guided through the basics of machine use and sewing terminology. Hands-on practice focuses on mastering straight, zigzag, and curved stitches.
Week 2: Sewing Machine Basics
Students learn to identify essential sewing tools and understand the parts and functions of a sewing machine. They’ll practice threading, adjusting tension, and experimenting with different stitches while completing a simple bookmark project.
Week 3: Fundamental Sewing Skills
This week emphasizes essential sewing techniques like cutting, pressing, turning, and topstitching. Students work on a fabric coaster while exploring fabric selection and interfacing applications for different projects.
Week 4: Understanding Patterns, Fabrics & Interfacing
Students deepen their understanding of fabric types and learn how to read and interpret sewing patterns. They’ll continue refining skills through coaster completion and begin a simple tote bag project.
Week 5: Finishing Techniques
The focus shifts to seam finishes, precision tools, and adding professional touches such as zippers and buttonholes. Students complete two small projects—a pillowcase and a pencil pouch—and are introduced to using a serger.
Week 6: Final Project, Sew & Tell
Students bring together everything they’ve learned to finish their projects and showcase their work. If time allows, they’ll create pajama pants as a final challenge and celebrate completion with certificates and a Sew & Tell showcase.
