About the Course
Ready to take your skills to the next level? This 6-week Sewing 102 course builds on your foundational knowledge and introduces you to the broader world of sewing—from garments and accessories to structured bags and home projects. You’ll refine your techniques, learn to read and modify patterns, and explore new fabrics and finishes. Through a variety of guided projects, you’ll strengthen your precision, creativity, and confidence—emerging as a well-rounded sewist ready to tackle more advanced designs.
Week 1: Review & Skill Refresh (Onboarding)
Students refresh their foundational skills with a review of sewing terminology, seam allowances, fabric grainlines, and stitch troubleshooting. The week concludes with a practical project—a fabric tray or structured storage basket—to reinforce precision and control.
Week 2: Intermediate Pattern Reading & Modifications
This week focuses on understanding commercial patterns in greater depth, including symbols, layout, and small fit adjustments. Students refine their precision with sewing tools and seam techniques while creating an unlined tote bag featuring a pattern modification element.
Week 3: Garment Construction Fundamentals
Students explore garment construction concepts such as ease, fit, darts, pleats, and gathers. Through hands-on practice with bias binding, pinking, and serged finishes, they build a foundation for clothing creation with a pajama pant or wrap skirt project.
Week 4: Closures, Fasteners & Functional Details
This week introduces functional sewing techniques—installing zippers, adding buttons or snaps, and applying interfacing or lining for structure. Students apply these skills in a project of choice, such as a zippered pouch or apron.
Week 5: Working with Different Fabrics
Students learn to confidently handle various fabric types, from stretch knits to structured woven. The week emphasizes adapting sewing techniques to different materials while completing a knit T-shirt or drawstring bag project.
Week 6: Final Project & Showcase
The final week brings all skills together in a larger, student-selected project—a garment or structured bag. Individualized guidance ensures professional finishing, culminating in a celebratory “Sew & Tell” presentation and the awarding of Sewing 102 Certificates of Completion.
